RusalkaFor his first collaboration with director Chas Rader-Shieber and designer Jacob A. Climer, Mr. Lerner both performed and choreographed Des Moines Metro Opera’s original production of Rusalka. Set to Dvořák’s lush and emotionally expansive score, the production marked Lerner’s entrée into full-length opera and offered a fertile creative landscape in which to craft a movement vocabulary rooted in magic, longing, and transformation. Embracing the opera’s haunting lyricism and mythic themes, Lerner’s choreography brought the world of water spirits and human entanglements to life through sinuous, otherworldly physicality. His dual role as dancer and choreographer allowed for an unusually integrated embodiment of the piece’s dramatic arc, setting the stage for what would become a dynamic and ongoing collaboration with the DMMO creative team.
